What is a Green Certificate?

Green Certificates are defined by the European system of certification for renewable energies (RECS), as an attestation of the production of electricity supplied to the operator of a power generating plant using renewable energies.
The emission of certificates is indexed to the production of electricity supplied to the grid by a power generating plant using renewable sources of energy and approved by the RECS. The certificate corresponds exactly to 1MWh (1,000 kilowatt hours) produced and supplied to the grid.

The system of certification thus allows the identification, coordination at a European level, and proof that a certain quantity of electricity has been produced from renewable sources.

A European framework to stimulate the use of renewable energy sources
Since 2003, the member states of the European Union are required to prove the origin of electricity consumed and produced from renewable energy sources. Green Certificates also reply to this obligation to follow, within the context of a coordinated structure, the production, distribution and consumption of electricity produced from renewable energy sources.
